Intuit’s Shift Away from QuickBooks Desktop: What It Means for Your Business

In late 2023, Intuit announced that it would no longer sell new subscriptions of certain QuickBooks Desktop products. This announcement marked a significant shift for the accounting industry, as well as business owners, since Desktop products have been a staple for many over the past few decades.

The Details:

Intuit will discontinue selling new subscriptions for QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus and Enhanced Payroll as of July 31, 2024. QuickBooks Enterprise subscriptions will remain available for purchase. The Enterprise product offers more advanced features like inventory management, detailed reporting, customized user roles, amongst many others. Accordingly, this subscription is the most expensive of the Desktop products offered.

What Does This Announcement Mean For My Company?

It is important to note that current subscriptions will not be affected.

If your company currently uses a Desktop product from the above list, you can continue to use that product with no interruptions. However, we will take this time to mention that it is best practice to upgrade your subscription every three years to avoid any support issues with an outdated version of your product. Currently, the most recent version released in 2024. If your company’s version is older than 2021, we recommend upgrading to 2024 to avoid any potential issues.

To Convert or Not To Convert?

As many know, QuickBooks Online has become the product of choice for many companies in recent years. Intuit has invested many resources to improve this software to meet the needs of various industries. And if there is a feature that “QBO” does not offer yet, there is most certainly an app that can sync with it for that purpose.

Many companies have chosen to make the switch from Desktop products to QBO. Although the programs are similar, QBO is not truly the same in appearance and process when compared to Desktop. However, QBO is very user-friendly overall and highly recommended.

Our firm can help with assessing if a conversion to QBO is right for your company. We have effective tools for assisting with converting your Desktop product to QBO, and we can also offer several levels of support and training during and after the transition.
